the pace of reading, clearly, depends entirely upon the reader. he may read as slowly or as rapidly as he can or wishes to read. if he does not understand something, he may stop and reread it, or go in search of elucidation before continuing. the reader can accelerate his pace when the material is easy or less than interesting, and slow down when it is difficult or absorbing. if what he reads is moving, he can put down the book for a few moments and cope with his emotions without fear of losing anything.

the pace of the television eperience cannot be controlled by the viewer; only its beginning and end are within his control as he clicks the knob on and off. he cannot slow down a delightful program or speed up a dreary one. he cannot "turn back" if a word or phrase is not understood. the pro-

gram moves ineorably forward, and what is lost or misunderstood remains so.

nor can the television viewer readily transform the material he receives into a form that might suit his particular emotional needs, as he invariably does with material he reads.the images move too quickly. he cannot use his own imagination to invest the people and events portrayed on television

with the personal meanings that would help him understand and resolve relationships and conflicts in his own life~ he is under the power of the imagination of the show's creators. in the television eperience the eyes and ears are overwhelmed with the immediacy of sights and sounds.

if someone enters the room while one is watching television--a friend, a relative, a child, someone, perhaps, one has not seen for some time--one must continue to watch or one will lose the thread. the greetings must wait, for the television program will not. a book, of course, can be set aside, with a little regret, perhaps, but with no sense of permanent loss.

This cartoon depicts an ironic scene: a man is walking dangerously on a wire with a pole in his hand. On one end of the pole hangs a box which is named "the convenience of jobs" while on the other end hangs a box which is labelled"illegal profits". The man is trying hard to reach the end of the wire, where a piece of papar is attached which says "you should be responsible for what you have done. " However, the man believes that he will not be blamed since he has taken just a little. The sobering aspect of this cartoon is corruption always happens on those who think they are the lucky ones.

Human nature being what it is, most people have a kind of fluke mind that they may not be punished since the amount they take illegally is small. However, this idea could not be more wrong in our contemporary society. Let's assume that all the government officials in China hold this idea. If this assumption comes true, it will definitely exert a butterfly effect: the appetite of these officials will become even bigger. The amount of money they take may end up as astronomical figures. One day their behavior will be revealed as severe crime and they will spend the rest of their lives in jail.

So it can be justified without any exaggeration that when we look at the consequences of curruption, we may find it very difficult to assess the costs. But these costs can be very considerable and may even hurl the whole society system into a occurs to many that the most effective solution is to appeal to the authorities, or to take legal means. But that is just a passive wayand only works on extreme cases. Therefore, I recommend that massive media, school education and family cultivation should be activated to call for self-discipline on this matter.

Nowadays, food has become easier to prepare. Has this change improved the way people live? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. The twentieth century has brought with it many advances. With those advances, human lives have changed dramatically. In some ways life is worse, but mostly it is better. Changes in food preparation methods, for example, have improved our lives greatly. The convenience of preparing food today is amazing. Even stoves have gotten too slow for us. Microwave cooking is much easier. We can press a few buttons and a meal is completely cooked in just a short time. People used to spend hours preparing an oven-cooked meal, and now they can use that time for other, better things. Plus, there are all kinds of portable, prepackaged foods we can buy. Heat them in the office microwave, and lunch at work is quick and easy. Food preparation today allows for more variety. With refrigerators and freezers, we can preserve a lot of different foods in our homes. Since technology makes cooking so much faster, people are willing to make several dishes for even a small meal. Parents are more likely to let children be picky, now that they can easily heat them up some prepackaged macaroni and cheese on the side. Needless to say, adults living in the same house may have very different eating habits as well. If they don’ t want to cook a lot of different dishes, it’ s common now to eat out at restaurants several times a week. Healthful eating is also easier than ever now. When people cook, they use new fat substitutes and cooking sprays to cut fat and calories. This reduces the risk of heart disease and high cholesterol. Additionally, we can buy fruits and vegetable fresh, frozen or canned. They are easy to prepare, so many of us eat more of those nutritious items daily. A hundred years ago, you couldn’ t imagine the process of taking some frozen fruit and ice from the freezer, adding some low-fat yogurt from a plastic cup and some juice from a can in the refrigerator, and whipping up a low-fat smoothie in the blender! Our lifestyle is fast, but people still like good food. What new food preparation technology has given us is more choices. Today, we can prepare food that is more convenient, healthier, and of greater variety than ever before in history.

is it the levitating quality of her sparkling, childlike voice? or the unepectedly robust turn it takes as she bursts into a soaring soprano? is it the simple, schoolgirlish mannerisms she imparts off-stage? or the imposing, larger-than-life diva persona she eudes on-stage?

what is it about sarah that entrances us so? remarkably enough, even her die-hard fans have trouble pinpointing the elusive, yet undeniable, appeal of sarah brightman. all agree, however, that the uncommon jutaposition of waif-like vulnerability and worldly sophistication, in both voice and manner, casts an irresistible allure.even her music defies categorization. through the years, sarah has confounded critics and record stores alike. it is not surprising, considering that her career has not only transcended musical genres, but has so deftly blurred the lines that divide and pigeon-hole musical forms. from pop to musical theatre, opera to classical crossover, few artists can lay claim to such musical breadth and depth. having sold over 15 million records and firmly cementing herself as the pre-eminent queen of the classical crossover world in recent years, sarah has chosen once again to challenge herself and break new musical ground.

harem, her new album, is an intoicating fusion of percussive world beat, dance grooves and pop sensibilities, carried forth by sarahs sometimes tender, but always entrancing, vocals. harem is a master-work, a fascinating amalgam of classic orchestral virtuosity, driving synthesizer beats and eotic musical instrumentation, punctuated at times by an operatic aria or two. haunting vocals, delicate nuances and intricate rhythms artfully coalesce into an epic soundscape that is seamless in eecution, sweeping in scale and soaring in emotional cadence. like sarah herself, the album is mystical and enchanting.if you are here at sarah brightmans official website, chances are, you already agree. there is definitely something about sarah. and for those of you who are new to the magic that sarah brightman so effortlessly weaves, youve come to the right place. brace yourself for a spell-binding eperience...

The history of life on earth has been a history of interaction between living things and their surroundings. To a large extent, the physical form and the habits of the earth's vegetation and its animal life have been molded by the environment. Considering the whole span of earthly time, the opposite effect, in which life actually modifies its surroundings, has been relatively slight. Only in the present century has one species--man acquired significant power to alter the nature of his world.

During the past quarter century this power has not only become increasingly great but it has changed in character. The most alarming of all man's assaults upon the environment is the contaminatien of air, earth, rivers, and sea with dangerous and even lethal materials. This pollution is for the most part irrecoverable. In this now universal contamination of the environment, chemicals are the sinister partners of radiation in changing the very nature of the world, the very nature of its life.

It took hundreds of millions of years to produce the life that now inhabits the earth. Given time not in years but in millennia life adjusts, and a balance has been reached. But in the modern world there is no time.

It is not my contention that chemical insecticides must never be used. I do contend that we have put poisonous and biologically potent chemicals indiscriminately into the hands of persons largely

or wholly ignorant of their potentials for harm. We have subjected enormous numbers of people to contact with these poisons, without their consent and often without their knowledge. I contend, furthermore, that we have allowed these chemicals to be used with little or no advance investigation of their effect on soil, water, wildlife, and man himself. Future generations are unlikely to forgive our lack of concern for the integrity of the natural world that supports all life.

standard usage includes those words and expressions understood, used, and accepted by a majority of the speakers of a language in any situation regardless of the level of formality. as such, these words and expressions are well defined and listed in standard dictionaries.

colloquialisms, on the other hand, are familiar words and idioms that are understood by almost all speakers of a language and used in informal speech or writing, but not considered appropriate for more formal situations. almost all idiomatic expressions are colloquial language. slang, however, refers to words and expressions understood by a large number of speakers but not accepted as good, formal usage by the majority. colloquial expressions and even slang may be found in standard dictionaries but will be so identified. both colloquial usage and slang are more common in speech than in writing.

colloquial speech often passes into standard speech. some slang also passes into standard speech, but other slang expressions enjoy momentary popularity followed by obscurity. in some cases, the majority never accepts certain slang phrases but nevertheless retains them in their collective memories.

every generation seems to require its own set of words to describe familiar objects and events. it has been pointed out by a number of linguists that three cultural conditions are necessary for the creation of a large body of slang expressions. first, the introduction and acceptance of new objects and situations in the society; second, a diverse population with a large number of subgroups; third, association among the subgroups and the majority population.

finally, it is worth noting that the terms "standard" "colloquial" and "slang" exist only as abstract labels for scholars who study language. only a tiny number of the speakers of any language will be aware that they are using colloquial or slang expressions. most speakers of english will, during appropriate situations, select and use all three types of expressions.

使用上義詞,如可以把saw寫作tool;用從句進(jìn)行解釋說明,如可以把“數(shù)碼相機(jī)”寫作a camera that takes pictures without film;避開自己不會寫的詞語,用自己熟悉的詞語重新構(gòu)思。

Iam Andrea.Perhaps the word "average" can best describe me. I am of average height, average weight and of average complexion. I have a thin face, double-lid eyes and a pointed nose.My hair is black, short and straight.I have never worn my hair long.I look like both my mother and

my father, but I have inherited their best parts.

lam a teacher, and I like my job. I believe her or his students can sometimes teach a teacher. Actually I have learnt a lot from my own teaching experience and my students. One particularly good thing about being a teacher is that I am learning something new each day and thus making progress each day. This is wonderful. Of course the income is modest, but on the other hand, quite stable. I keep growing all the time. I find great rewards both monetarily and mentally.

I have many hobbies: reading books, raising pets, making dresses, etc. I like volleyball very much, but I can't play it very often, because it is a team sport. It is difficult to get enough people to play volleyball with me. It's a shame. I derive great pleasure out of my hobbies.

Generally speaking, I am open, honest and easy-going. I hate hypocrisy and injustice. Fairness is very important to me. I try to be fair in everything I do. I have great appreciation for physical and spiritual independence. I am a bit disorganized and impatient sometimes.

I don't have many friends, but I do have a few. I have both male and female friends. We do sports together, go shopping together; and we exchange our views and ideas and share happiness and sadness. Of course we help each other if necessary. I always consider myself a lucky person. I am lucky in my family, I am lucky in my career, I am lucky in my friendship, I am lucky in many things. In one word, I am lucky in life. I am really grateful for all these.

the most pervasive and persuasive of modern technologies, marked by rapid change and growth-is moving into a new era, an era of etraordinary sophistication and versatility, which promises to reshape our lives and our world. it is an electronic revolution of sorts, made possible by the marriage of television and computer technologies.

the word "television", derived from its greek (tele: distant) and latin (visio: sight) roots, can literally be interpreted as sight from a distance. very simply put, it works in this way: through a sophisticated system of electronics, television provides the capability of converting an image (focused on a special photoconductive plate within a camera) into electronic impulses, which can be sent through a wire or cable. these impulses, when fed into a receiver (television set), can then be electronically reconstituted into that same image.

television is more than just an electronic system, however. it is a means of epression, as well as a vehicle for communication, and as such becomes a powerful tool for reaching other human beings.

the field of television can be divided into two categories determined by its means of transmission. first, there is broadcast television, which reaches the masses through broad-based airwave transmission of television signals. second, there is nonbroadcast television, which provides for the needs of individuals or specific interest groups through controlled transmission techniques.

traditionally, television has been a medium of the masses. we are most familiar with broadcast television because it has been with us for about thirty-seven years in a form similar to what eists today. during those years, it has been controlled, for the most part, by the broadcast networks, abc, nbc, and cbs, who have been the major purveyors of news, information, and entertainment. these giants of broadcasting have actually shaped not only television but our perception of it as well. we have come to look upon the picture tube as a source of entertainment, placing our role in this dynamic medium as the passive viewer.

As is shown in the picture(graphcartoon able),it goes without saying that the drawing aims at revealing a common problem(in China):______.Its status as the focus of public concern mainly results from its profound influence on individuals, collective and even the whole world. Each of us should attach high emphasis on solving it.

As a matter of fact, the symbolic meaning the picture conveys is deep and profound. Naturally and necessarily, there are two major ways coping with this problem. The first way to tackle it is to appeal to authorities to take measures. Once achieving the success of solving the problem, the whole society also thrives/makes progress. Solving the problem can accelerate better individuals’development. The other way that is worth adopting is to work out new laws. Where there are better laws, there are more hopes, vitality and development. These advisable laws eventually brings economic prosperity and social harmony. Finally, I can safely come to the conclusion that it is high time we enhanced the awareness of people that is every vital to us. Only by these means can we succeed in solving the problem in the near future.(1 Therefore, measures should be taken to terminate the ridiculous affair. First and foremost, governments should establish some regulations to prohibit enterprises and people from making such misdeeds. What’s more, people should get ready to pass criticism upon such misdeeds anytime and anywhere. After all, it is necessary to develop our society by performing hard work instead of talking nonsense.

In my opinion, it is imperative that we should take some drastic actions. On the one hand, we should appeal to our authorities to enact concrete laws to control commercial fishing. On the other hand, we should enhance people's awareness that ocean resources are vital to us and the ecological balance will be guaranteed with the strategy of sustainable development. Only by doing so can we effectively protect our natural resources. Also I am convinced that we humans can overcome this difficulty and we will have a bright future.)

To conclude, we should not yield to mediocrity regardless of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. So the prospect we are looking forward to will be bright and encouraging.

In this picture, countless graduates, with air of the confusedwanderers about them, face four radically different choices --- startinga business, taking part in the entrance exams for postgraduate schools, goingabroad or hunting a job. As is known to all, howto make a wise choice, for graduates, has been the talk of the society eversince the announcement of the expansion of higher educationin 20xx.

For another thing, compared with others, graduatesselecting the right option can make steady and deep development. Or, putanother way, advisable options can be described as a bridge between universitygraduates and success。

Although the drive to protect XXX interests and rights is a long-standing and strenuous one ,our joint efforts will eventually pay off .

去年,我在練習(xí)時積累了這樣一個諺語,united we stand,divided we fall.
