　　拉里·佩奇(Larry Page，1973.03.26-)，全名勞倫斯·愛德華·佩奇(Lawrence Edward Page)，Google搜索引擎的創(chuàng)始人之一，2011年4月4日佩奇正式出任谷歌CEO。拉里·佩奇出生在美國(guó)密歇根州東蘭辛市的一個(gè)猶太家庭，為美國(guó)密歇根大學(xué)安娜堡分校的畢業(yè)生，擁有理工科學(xué)士學(xué)位;因其出色的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)才能獲得過多項(xiàng)榮譽(yù)，以獎(jiǎng)勵(lì)他對(duì)工學(xué)院的貢獻(xiàn)。他曾擔(dān)任密西根大學(xué)Eta Kappa Nu 榮譽(yù)學(xué)會(huì)的會(huì)長(zhǎng)。其指導(dǎo)教授是 Terry Winograd 博士。Google 就是由 Page 在斯坦福大學(xué)發(fā)起的研究項(xiàng)目轉(zhuǎn)變而來的。 在斯坦福大學(xué)中，佩奇遇到了謝爾蓋·布林。吃了無數(shù)個(gè)閉門羹之后佩奇和布林決定自己創(chuàng)業(yè)，但他們手中僅有的一點(diǎn)現(xiàn)金都因購買大量的數(shù)據(jù)盤和儲(chǔ)存器作研究而花光了。他們的一位教師，也是SUN微系統(tǒng)的創(chuàng)始人之一安迪·別赫托希姆在關(guān)鍵時(shí)刻給予他們很大幫助。別赫托希姆確是個(gè)很有遠(yuǎn)見的人，在看完他們的演示后，立馬開了張10萬美元的支票幫助成立Google公司。之后兩人又從家人朋友那里到處借錢，籌得100萬美元作為最初投資。1998年9月7日，Google公司在加利福尼亞州的曼羅帕克成立。一個(gè)朋友租給佩奇和布林辦公的車庫在當(dāng)時(shí)看來已經(jīng)不錯(cuò)了，有一臺(tái)洗衣機(jī)，還有熱水器。他們雇用了第一位員工克雷格·希爾弗斯坦，現(xiàn)在希爾弗斯坦是Google公司的科技主管。 1999年2月他們搬了新的辦公室，雖然條件仍然簡(jiǎn)陋，但比車庫好點(diǎn)，一張乒乓桌就作為正式的會(huì)議場(chǎng)所，8名員工在辦公室里都轉(zhuǎn)不過身，一個(gè)人要出門所有人都得起身挪開凳子才能騰出地方。

　　短短幾年Google就迅速發(fā)展成為目前規(guī)模最大的搜索引擎，并向雅虎、美國(guó)在線等其他目錄索引和搜索引擎提供后臺(tái)網(wǎng)頁查詢服務(wù)。目前Google每天處理的搜索請(qǐng)求達(dá)2億次，這一數(shù)字還在不斷增長(zhǎng)。通過對(duì)30多億網(wǎng)頁進(jìn)行整理，Google可為世界各地的用戶提供適合需求的搜索結(jié)果，而且搜索時(shí)間通常不到半秒鐘。

　　graduation speaker says that - It's a great honor.But, in my case, it really is so deeply true being here is more special and more personal for me than most of you know. I'd like to tell you why.A long time ago,in this cold September of 1962,there was a Steven's co-op at this very university.That co-op had a

　　kitchen with a ceiling that had been cleaned by student volunteers probably every decade or so。

　　Picture a college girl named Gloria,climbing up high on a ladder,struggling to clean that filthy ceiling.Standing on the floor, a young boarder named Carl was admiring the view.And that's how they met.They were my parents,so I suppose you could say I'm a direct result of that kitchen chemistry experiment, right here at Michigan.My Mom is here with us today,and we should probably go find the spot and put a plaqueup on the ceiling that says: "Thanks Mom and Dad!"

　　Everyone in my family went here to Michigan:my brother, my Mom ,my Dad -- all of us.My Dad actually got the quantity discount:He got all three and a half of his degrees here.His Ph.D. was in Communication Science because they thought Computers were just a passing fad when he earned it 44 years ago.He and Mom made a big sacrifice for that degree.They argued at times over pennies, while raising my newborn brother.Mom typed my Dad's dissertation by hand,kind of ironic of those computer science dissertation。

　　Dad's.And my underwear, oh never mind, sorry.My father's father worked in the Chevy plant in Flint, Michigan. He was an assemblyline worker.He drove his two children here to Anna Arbor,and told them: That is where you're going to go to college.I know it sounds funny now.Both of his kids actually did graduate from Michigan.That was the American dream。

　　His daughter, Beverly, is also with us today.My Grandpa used to carry an "Alley Oop" hammer,a heavy iron pipe with a big hunk of lead melted on the end.The workers made them during the sit-down strikes to protect

　　themselves.When I was growing up, we used that hammer whenever we

　　needed to pound a stake or something into the yard.It is wonderful that most people don't need to carry a heavy blunt object for protection anymore.But just in case, I brought it with me.My Dad became a professor at uh…Michigan

　　State,and I was an incredibly lucky boy.A professor's life is pretty flexible,and he was able to spend oodles of time raising me.Could there be a better upbringing than university brat?

　　What I'm trying to tell you is that this is way more than just a homecoming for me.It's not easy for me to express how proud I am to be here,with my Mom, my brother and my wife Lucy, and with all of you,at this amazing institution that is responsible for my very existence.I am thrilled for all of you,and I'm thrilled for your families and friends,as all of us join this great, big Michigan family I feel I've been a part of all of all my life.What I'm also trying to tell you is that I know exactly what it feels like to be sitting in your seat,listening to some old gasbag give a long-winded commencementspeech.Don't worry. I'll be brief.I have a story about following dreams.Or maybe more accurately, it's a story about finding a path to make those dreams real。

　　You know what it's like,to wake up in the middle of the night with a vivid dream?And you know how, if you don't have a pencil and pad by the bed it will be completely gone by the next morning.I had one of those dreams when I was

　　23.When I suddenly woke up, I was thinking:what if we could download the whole web,and just keep the links and… I grabbed a pen and started

　　writing!Sometimes it is important to wake up and stop dreaming.I spent the middle of that night scribbling out the details and convincing myself it would work。

　　想想看：午夜你從美夢(mèng)中醒來，然后躺下接著睡回籠覺，第二天早上準(zhǔn)會(huì)把昨晚的美夢(mèng)忘個(gè)精光。我23歲時(shí)，就做過這樣的美夢(mèng)。我猛然驚醒，想把所有的網(wǎng)絡(luò)內(nèi)容下載下來，通過鏈接的.方式保存。于是，我抓起筆就開始寫。還好我把握住機(jī)會(huì)，從夢(mèng)里及時(shí)醒來，花了一整晚研究出實(shí)現(xiàn)方案，自信滿滿。

　　Soon after, I told my advisor, Terry Winograd,it would take a couple of weeks for me to download the web -he nodded knowingly, fully aware it would take much longer but wise enough to not tell me.The optimism of youth is often underrated!Amazingly, at that time,I had no thought of building a search engine.The idea wasn't even on the radar.Much later we happened upon a

　　better way of rankingand we made a really great search engine,and Google was born.When a really great dream shows up, grab it!When I was here at Michigan,I had actually been taught how to make dreams real!

　　I know it sounds funny,but that is what I learned in a summer camp

　　converted into a training program called Leadershape.Yes, we've got a few out there.Their slogan is to have a "healthy disregard for the impossible".That

　　program encouraged me to pursue a crazy idea at the time.I wanted to build a personal rapid transit system on campus to replace the buses.Yeah, you're still working on that I hear.It was a futuristic way of solving our transportation problem.I still think a lot about transportation you never lose a dream, it just incubates as a hobby.Many things that people labor hard to do now,like cooking, cleaning, and driving will require much less human time in the future.That is, if we "have a healthy disregardfor the impossible and actually build new solutions。

　　聽起來有點(diǎn)扯，但我確實(shí)從 "塑造領(lǐng)導(dǎo)力"夏令營(yíng)中得到了啟發(fā)�？矗�真的有人參加過的吧。我們的口號(hào)是“世上無難事只怕有心人“!我們被要求去實(shí)現(xiàn)自己看似瘋狂的夢(mèng)想。我想建立個(gè)人快速交通系統(tǒng)來替代公交，我知道你們還在研究。沒準(zhǔn)是今后解決交通問題的好方法。我時(shí)不時(shí)還在考慮交通問題，夢(mèng)想不會(huì)消失，會(huì)變成習(xí)慣!我們現(xiàn)在花費(fèi)精力做的事情，比如做飯、打掃、開車，今后占用的時(shí)間會(huì)越來越少，這不是天方夜譚。世上無難事，只怕有心人!

　　I think it is often easier to make progress on mega-ambitious dreams.I know that sounds completely nuts.But, since no one else is crazy enough to do it, you have little competition.In fact, there are so few people this crazy that I feel like I know them all by first name.They all travel as if they are pack dogs and stick to each other like glue。

　　The best people want to work on the big challenges.That is what happened with Google.Our mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.How can that not get you excited?But we almost didn't start Google actually because my co-founder Sergey and I were too worried about dropping out of our Ph.D. program.None of you have that issue it seems.You are probably on the right track, if you feel like a sidewalk worm during a rainstorm!That is about how we felt after we maxed out three credit cards buying hard disks off the back of a truck.That was actually the first hardware for Google。

　　wanted to work on.Thank goodness my advisor said,"why don't you work on the web for a while".He gave me some seriously good advicebecause the web was growing with people and activity, even in 1995!Technology and especially the Internet can really help you be lazy.Lazy? What I mean is a group of three people can write software that millions can use and enjoy。

　　Can three people answer the phone a million times?Find the leverage in the world,so you can be truly lazy!Overall, I know it seems like the world is

　　crumblingout there,but it is actually a great time in your life to get a little crazy, follow your curiosity, and be ambitious about it.Don't give up on your dreams. The world needs you all!
